metal content-1968 canadian dime
anybody know of a way to id metal content of a 1968 canadian dime?
there seems to be some disagreement about the years they switched from 80% silver to 50% copper/silver, or nickel. i don't have a scale. tia, j6p |
Re: metal content-1968 canadian dime
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but won't the 50% silver dime stick to a magnet, whereas the 80% silver dime won't?
As an interesting side note, some of the 1968 Canadian dimes were struck in the U.S. |
Re: metal content-1968 canadian dime
Part way through 1967 they switched from 80% to 50% on quarters and dimes (dollars and halves are all 80%). In 1968 they went from 50% to 99% nickel on the quarters and dimes (all dollars and halves are nickel).
The nickel sticks to a magnet, where as the silver ones do not. Here is a longer description: http://reviews.ebay.com/Buying-Canad...00000001383070 |
Re: metal content-1968 canadian dime
I have heard this question before.
I didnt know there was so much confusion when Canada stepped away from silver coinage. At least in the US it was a clean break 90%....few years of 40% and boom. I wonder how those thing will fare when the great silver meltdown picks up steam?? T |
Re: metal content-1968 canadian dime
thanks all!
it sticks to the magnet-therefore REJECTED j6p |
Re: metal content-1968 canadian dime
I've seen some dealers take 1967 at 50% only. 1968 I've seen some take non-magnetic at 50% and others not want it at all. I find it just easier to keep 1966 and prior and not bother with the confusion.
